What we do
Our projects
Everything you see here is done by neighbours in their free time. It is funded by donations and by the income from our own events.
Overview
International Street Festival
The association's biggest project — the next festival is on 29 May 2027.
Seniors' breakfast
Every first Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. at the Kürtenhof — free of charge, registration required.
Local traditions & schools
Weckmänner (sweet bread figures traditionally shared on St Martin's Day) for over 1,500 primary school children, St Martin's processions and craft activities.
Youth work in sport
One-off grants for training sessions for children and young people in the neighbourhood.
Project
Seniors' breakfast at the Kürtenhof
Having breakfast together once a month: to build contacts in the neighbourhood and to counter loneliness in old age. Taking part is free of charge.
When
Every first Saturday of the month from 10 a.m.
Where
KürtenhofBruchstraße 12
Düsseldorf-Flingern
Who it's for
For older people from the district. The breakfast is meant to strengthen social contacts in old age and to help counter loneliness.
Registration
Please register so that we know how many places to set. Just send us a short message — your contacts are Birgit Wagner and Luise Hoffmann.
The Kürtenhof is the AWO's neighbourhood meeting place. Together with the local AWO branch, we will soon be helping to modernise the facilities there — the kitchen first, and the seating too if it can be arranged. This benefits everyone who uses the meeting place, not just our breakfast.
Project
Local traditions and support for primary schools
Every year in November, the classes of Flingern's primary schools receive large Weckmänner from us — most recently more than 60 classes with over 1,500 children at four schools. For us, it is less about the pastry than about the idea behind it: a Weckmann is shared. Community grows where people are there for one another.
Our thanks go to Bäckerei Oehme, who support us reliably and with excellent quality.
€450
for the St Martin's procession of GGS Flurstraße, so that it could take place.
€200
for making St Martin's lanterns at KGS Mettmanner Straße.
€300
for books for the reading week at KGS Mettmanner Straße.
Amounts like these come from donations
Every Weckmann and every St Martin's procession we fund is paid for by someone who trusts us to do it. How you can help.
Project
Youth work in sport
In 2023 we supported the tennis section of Post-Sport Düsseldorf e.V. with €1,000 — this paid for training sessions for children up to the age of 12. In 2025 we added €1,250 for further training.
These were two individual grants for a specific purpose, not ongoing funding. We decide on requests like these case by case.
Independent project of the Bürgerinitiative
The FlingerPfad
The FlingerPfad initiative runs guided walks through the district (a local history trail) in cooperation with the Bürgerinitiative Flingern and the zakk. Following the traces, the walks bring to light almost 150 years of industrial history that has shaped the district. 30 information steles mark important historical sites. The walks are led by Kaspar Michels.
The whole trail takes more than four hours. That is why it is divided into four routes of up to two hours each — for example “Zwischen Stahlindustrie und Hausbesetzung” (Between the steel industry and squatting), “Vom Lierenfelder Bahnhof bis zur Fortuna” (From Lierenfeld station to Fortuna) and “Vom Flinger Broich bis zum Uhrenturm” (From Flinger Broich to the clock tower). Over six years, this has grown into more than 60 guided walks with almost 1,700 participants.
Booking a guided walk
Registration is always required, by email to stadtteilfuehrung@zakk.de. By arrangement, walks for neighbourhood groups, school classes or clubs are also possible on a date of your choice. You can also find dates at zakk.de and kiefern.org.
