Team Flingern

The Bürgerinitiative Flingern e.V. (Flingern Residents' Initiative) makes life in our neighbourhood more caring and more liveable — run entirely by volunteers, from the neighbourhood for the neighbourhood, true to our motto: miteinander füreinander (together, for each other).

What we're working on right now

Christmas and craft market at Quartier8

For the third time, Quartier8 invites you to its Christmas and craft market, together with FlingernNRD and us, the Bürgerinitiative Flingern. From 4 to 10 p.m. the back courtyard at Schwelmer Straße 8 turns into a Christmas market: with colourful handicrafts, live DJ Bandhu, mulled wine, waffles and bratwurst, including vegetarian options.

  • 6 p.m.: performance by the children of “HIIT Dance”
  • 8 p.m.: “Altbierstimmen” choir

Where: Schwelmer Straße 8, 40235 Düsseldorf (back courtyard)
Come along to stroll, celebrate and enjoy – we look forward to seeing you!

The Weckmänner are coming this week

The time has come: next week, all four primary schools in Flingern will receive their Weckmänner from us, just in time for St Martin's Day. (A Weckmann is a sweet bread figure traditionally shared on St Martin's Day.) Every class gets one large Weckmann with icing and almonds to share, plus one for each school's staff. That makes 59 Weckmänner for 55 classes at GGS Flurstraße, the Montessori-Grundschule Lindenstraße, the Brehm-Schule and KGS Mettmanner Straße. Once again this year, they are baked and delivered by Bäckerei Oehme.

For us, it is less about the baking and more about the idea behind it: the Weckmann is shared. Your donations make this possible – thank you!

Our website has a new look

We have rebuilt this site from scratch: clearer, just as easy to read on your phone as on your computer, and with photos from the life of our association instead of staged pictures. If you enlarge the text or use a screen reader, you can now get through everywhere — that mattered more to us than any gimmicks.

The structure is new too: the International Street Festival now has its own website, flingern-strassenfest.de (external site). The programme, stalls and registration are listed and kept up to date there. Here you will still find the date and what the festival means for the neighbourhood.

Is something wrong, missing or hard to use? Write to us at info@buergerinitiative-flingern.de — and we will fix it.

After more than 25 years, our playground supervision at Hermannplatz comes to an end

On 15 September, after more than 25 years, our playground supervision at Hermannplatz comes to an end. The needs there have changed in recent years; in addition, we were unable to agree with the City of Düsseldorf on terms for the continued use of the Hermanns-Hütte that would have been workable for us.

The Kinderspielhaus was very happy to take over most of the play materials; whatever was left over is being reused at the Kürtenhof or has been put into storage. We would like to thank everyone for their long loyalty to this popular project — especially the Kinderspielhaus, the Youth Welfare Office, District Council 2 and our project leaders.

A neighbourhood is more than streets and houses. Flingern lives through the people who roll up their sleeves — for children and young people, for older people, for everyone who needs support.

Project 01 — The heart of the neighbourhood

The International Street Festival

The highlight of every year: a festival from the neighbourhood for the neighbourhood. On three streets, neighbours, clubs, organisations and parishes come together — with a colourful music and stage programme and around 240 flea market stalls.

  • 3 streets full of encounters, music and stage programme
  • 240 flea market stalls — Flingern's biggest neighbourhood flea market
  • Run by volunteers — helpers, performers, partners and supporters

Next International Street Festival: Saturday, 29 May 2027

Project 02 — Making history visible

The FlingerPfad

Almost 150 years of industrial history have shaped Flingern. The FlingerPfad, our local history trail, makes it visible: 30 stations mark important historic places in the neighbourhood — accompanied by neighbourhood walking tours in cooperation with the zakk.

  • 30 stations recall places that shaped the neighbourhood
  • Tours on four routes of around two hours each
  • More than 60 guided tours with almost 1,700 participants in six years

Our vision for Flingern

A neighbourhood that preserves its history
and shapes its future together.

Preserving historic places

Industrial monuments should be preserved as places of industrial heritage — instead of standing empty or being demolished.

Lively squares

Places like the Kürtenhof become meeting points — with open activities for the neighbourhood and room to get together.

A caring neighbourhood

Financial support for schools, nurseries and youth sport, as well as cultural and leisure activities for seniors and children.

Who we are here for

Flingern is there for everyone.

Children & young people

Youth work in sport, support for the primary schools and activities that give young people room in the neighbourhood.

Older people

The seniors' breakfast at the Kürtenhof and other activities — against loneliness, for taking part in neighbourhood life.

Neighbours & families

The street festival, flea market stalls and meeting places bring families and neighbours together.

Supporters & partners

Clubs, parishes and local businesses that strengthen community life with their time, money or commitment.

Facts & figures

Commitment you can measure.

The people behind it

Team Flingern – that's all of us.

Behind every project are neighbours who give their time. Three of them tell you why they take part.

Connected with us

Together we are strong

We see ourselves as networkers in the neighbourhood. We know the clubs and organisations in Flingern — each has its own strengths and its own focus. We see this as a partnership and keep in close touch: with schools and nurseries, with parishes, sports clubs and institutions in the neighbourhood, with the Youth Welfare Office and District Council 2.

Do you have an idea for the neighbourhood?

We are always open to new projects — and we also support other people's plans if they are good for Flingern. If you are planning something or need support for your project, tell us about it. Write to us or drop by our regular get-together (Stammtisch).

Get active now

Flingern needs you.
Miteinander. Füreinander.

Whether it's time, money or commitment — every kind of support strengthens community life in Flingern. The association funds its work through donations and income from its own activities, such as the International Street Festival.
