Team Flingern

About us

The Bürgerinitiative Flingern (Flingern Residents' Initiative) is a non-profit association dedicated to social projects in the Düsseldorf district of Flingern — run entirely by volunteers, since 1980.

Who we are

Since 1980, the association has been working to make community life in Flingern more social and more liveable. Nobody is paid for this — everything that happens here happens in the free time of people from the neighbourhood.

Under the motto miteinander füreinander (“together, for each other”), we run projects together with our neighbours, with a special focus on children and young people, older people and people who are socially disadvantaged.

Non-profit

Registered association since 1980, register of associations no. 6036 at Düsseldorf Local Court (Amtsgericht).

Run entirely by volunteers

There are no paid positions. Every hour of work is donated time.

Funded by the neighbourhood

Donations and income from our own activities such as the street festival flow back into the district.

History

How a festival became an association

1978

City councillor Karl Wagner and a few people from Flingern launch the first International Street and Children's Festival. The Karl-Wagner-Platz, right in the middle of the festival area, is named after him today.

1979

The Bürgerinitiative Flingern takes over the organisation of the festival. The count starts here: 2027 will see the 46th International Street Festival.

1980

The loose group becomes a registered association: the Bürgerinitiative Flingern e.V.

Since the 2000s

Alongside the street festival, the social projects grow: activities for children in the neighbourhood, support for the primary schools, funding for youth work in sport.

Today

The highlight of every year is still the International Street Festival: on three streets, with a colourful music and stage programme, around 240 flea-market stalls and information stands from associations, organisations and church congregations. On top of that, there is the FlingerPfad and lots of smaller activities in the neighbourhood.
